Cane toads are poisonous toads from South America which breed like rabbits and can grow big to the size of dinner plates. The migration of cane toads to Australia dates back to 1933 when Australia was facing an economic problem in Sugar cane industry due to beetles. About 30 of them were imported from America and set free to counter the problem. The idea was that they would eat those beetles damaging the sugar cane fields. They adapted the environment and grew rapidly in number.

Cane toad race is a traditional race in Australia greatly enjoyed by the local Australians as well as the tourists. This unique race is witnessed by the tourists no where around the globe but in Australian pubs. There is a fancy dress show before the race. Then about around 10 toads are sponsored, numbered and named. The audience from different countries take their toads after bidding; put a name on their back associated to their country, kiss them and then put them in the bucket. The bucket is then left on the dance floor. The toad which leaves the dance floor first is declared the winner toad. They gain huge applause and cheer from the crowd.  The crowd goes crazy while watching the race. A local race can be seen in the following youtube video

After the race the toads are collected and put back in the bucket for the next race. The sponsors of the winning toads get prizes. Second race takes place at night. Some animal lovers find this cruel to the animal. And many think cane toads are not treated sadistically during the race. Via Source
